About S/S Roping
Wrangling Up Business,
My brother (Casey -11 yrs.) and I (Colter -13 yrs.) have been rodeoing since we were preschoolers. We decided to build a portable roping dummy to practice our rodeo events. We knew there would be a market for this quality product. We started manufacturing for business in November of 2006. Our short term goal was to earn enough money to go to a professional roping clinic. Our long term goals involve buying land with an indoor/outdoor arena so we can rope year long in northern Wyoming. That will help us get to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas someday.
With the help of our parents we figured out the engineering, assembling, budgeting, and marketing of our product. I (Colter) learned how to use power tools in industrial technology at Middle School. I cut out most of the plastic pipe. After I cut the pipe, my brother Casey, assembles the dummies. We both get in on the painting.
With the help of my mother, we were able to set up a web site, sell on eBay, and national magazine ads. My parents think it’s a great way for us boys to learn about the business and to help finance our rodeo habit. And I must say, it is a better way to spend an afternoon than in front of the TV.
Our roping dummies have been sold in scattered states across the nation. But our most favorite customer was a soldier serving in Iraq, who purchased a roping dummy through eBay. He said he missed team roping and wanted to practice his roping skills while out of the country. We decided to ship it for free, since this soldier was serving our country. It was the least we could do.
For now we are trying to keep up with increasing number of orders. We both have big ambitions for S/S Roping. My brother Casey said, “I hope it skyrockets!” I guess I do too!
